Kansas City Bier Meisters Banquet

Postby beer4bill » February 3rd, 2013, 9:25 pm

The Kansas City Bier Meisters is hosting an awards banquet in conjunction with our 30th annual competition on 2/16/2013. That is Home brew speak for freaking great beer dinner. Alex Pope is catering we will have a Flanders Red from CSBOSOX, various home brews and beers from the local breweries on draft. It's $35 a head and IMHO one of the best beer events in KC.

Tickets can be purchased at http://www.kcbiermeisters.org/comp/.

Cheers,

A friend and I had been flirting with the idea of visiting a Bier Meisters meeting sometime, but since the move to the opposite side of the city (from Olathe), that's a lot less likely to happen--at least on a week night. I'm curious why the club moved from KS to MO. Did it have anything to do with the homebrew laws in KS?

We lost our long time home in Lenexa a couple of years back because the building was sold. We then moved to a church in downtown OP. That was a great location but after having our competition there last year some members of the congregation learned a homebrew club was meeting there and complained and we got kicked out. We then found the current place.

It's not that easy to find a decent sized room available on Friday nights for a low price (the current location is free) without restrictions like requiring us to hire a security guard, which a lot of places have.

It is possible that we would have moved the competition to Missouri anyway as the authority in Kansas has apparently become interested in enforcing existing law against homebrew competitions but that happened after we moved the meeting location to Missouri.

Thanks John. That all makes sense. The homebrew laws in KS are very restrictive.

Hmmm. I had a friend "back in the day" who's now a rep in the KS house. I wonder if he'd be willing to take a revised law through committee.

Due to the position KS took in terms of home brewing, a coalition of home brewers and clubs have the started the process to legalize home brewing in KS. As of recent, the proposed bills are circulating with in the House and Senate. The bill numbers are SB 112 and HB 2223. Please contact your friend and ask they support the bill.

The coalition is using a FB group to complicated, the group can be found under Kansas Homebrewers Alliance.

Wait, home brewing is illegal in the state of Kansas? I actually did not know that.

Last year the ABC contacted my club (Kansas City Bier Meisters) to let us know after 29 years, our home brew competition is illegal in KS. Nothing had changed with the law, we just came up on the ABC radar.

This caused some concern about ABC starting to enforce laws regarding homebrewers. Specifically the Personal and Family Use clause. As a result, competitions are at risk (KCBMs). It could extend to club meetings as well if strictly enforced.

Statute
Kansas statute Chapter 41, Article 1, § 41-104 permits the making of wine, cider or beer by a person from fruits, vegetables or grains, or the product thereof, by simple fermentation and without distillation, if it is made solely for the use of the maker and the maker's family.

MO has similar laws concerning home brew. But due to the issue at St. Louis Heritage beer festival, Schlafly start the process to expand the home brew laws in MO. http://www.stltoday.com/entertainment/d ... f6878.html

Thanks Bill. You mind double-checking the bill numbers?
